Raw Hair Suppliers: How to Vet One Before Your First Order

Raw hair suppliers are not all the same kind of business. Some collect hair, some run workshops that sort and weft it, some only resell stock bought from others, and some focus on exporting to overseas buyers. If you run a salon, wig line or hair brand, knowing which type of raw hair supplier you are talking to tells you what questions to ask, what to expect from samples and how much control you will have over quality. This guide explains where raw hair comes from, the main types of suppliers, how to vet one before your first order and how to run a low-risk sample order.

This article focuses on the supply chain and the vetting process. For a buyer checklist on testing hair and comparing vendors, see our guide on how to choose raw hair vendors, and for planning order sizes and shipping, read our raw Indian hair wholesale buying guide.

What a Raw Hair Supplier Actually Does

A raw hair supplier is any business that sells unprocessed human hair to other businesses. In practice the hair passes through several hands between the donor and your shelf. Each step affects the final quality, so it helps to understand the chain before you compare quotes.

The raw hair supply chain

  1. Collection. Hair is gathered from donors. In India, a well-known source is temple hair, offered during religious ceremonies. Our South Indian temple hair vendor guide explains this source in more detail.
  2. Sorting. Collected hair is sorted by length, texture and condition. Short, damaged or tangled hair is separated out.
  3. Cleaning and drawing. Hair is washed and combed. Drawing removes shorter strands so the ends are fuller; this is where single drawn and double drawn hair comes from.
  4. Wefting or bulk packing. Hair is sewn onto a track as machine wefts, or packed as loose bulk hair for braiding and custom work.
  5. Finishing products. Some suppliers also make closures, frontals and wigs from the same hair.
  6. Sale and export. Finished stock is sold to local traders or shipped to buyers abroad.

The fewer unknown hands the hair passes through, the easier it is for a supplier to tell you honestly where it came from and how it was handled.

Types of Raw Hair Suppliers

Most raw hair suppliers fall into one of four groups, although many businesses combine more than one role.

Collectors

Collectors gather and sort hair at the source and usually sell in large raw lots to workshops. They are rarely the right partner for a salon, because their hair is not yet cleaned, drawn or wefted.

Manufacturers and workshops

Raw hair manufacturers process collected hair into finished products: drawn bulk hair, machine wefts, closures, frontals and wigs. Buying close to the workshop usually gives you better information about how each line is made and more consistency from one batch to the next.

Traders and resellers

Traders buy finished stock from several workshops and resell it. They can offer wide choice, but because the hair may come from different sources each time, it is harder to guarantee the same quality on every reorder. Ask a trader directly where their stock comes from.

Exporters

Exporters specialise in selling to overseas buyers. A good exporter understands international shipping, tracking and invoices, and communicates in your language and time zone. Many raw Indian hair exporters are also manufacturers.

How to Vet Raw Hair Suppliers Before You Order

Before you pay anything, spend time asking questions in writing. A trustworthy supplier answers clearly and does not rush you.

Questions to ask every supplier

  • Where is the hair collected, and which region is it from (for example South Indian or North Indian)?
  • Do you sort, draw and weft the hair yourselves, or buy finished stock?
  • Is this line fully raw, or has it been steamed, coloured or chemically processed?
  • Are the textures natural or created with steam?
  • Is the bulk hair single drawn or double drawn?
  • What is the minimum order, and can I mix textures and lengths?
  • Which courier do you use, and how will I receive tracking?
  • What happens if the delivery does not match the order?

Check the business, not just the hair

  • Look for a real website with clear contact details, a shipping policy and a returns policy.
  • Make sure payments go to an account in the supplier’s business name.
  • Ask for real, unedited photos and videos of the hair in daylight, not only studio images.
  • Keep all agreements in writing, by email or chat, so details are easy to check later.
  • Be careful with prices far below everyone else’s; very cheap raw hair is often mixed or processed.

Running a Low-Risk Sample Order

Never place a large stock order with a new raw hair supplier without testing their hair first. A small sample order shows you the real quality and how the supplier communicates.

  1. Choose your best-selling specification. Test the texture and length your clients buy most, not a rare one.
  2. Write down the details. Product, origin, texture, length and quantity, confirmed by the supplier before payment.
  3. Inspect on arrival. Check weight, length, stitching and texture against what was agreed.
  4. Wash and style it. Wash, blow dry, straighten and let it dry naturally to see how it really behaves.
  5. Wear-test it. If you are a salon, install it on a client or a mannequin and watch for shedding and tangling over several weeks.
  6. Keep a reference piece. Save part of the approved sample to compare with future deliveries.

For detailed cuticle, burn and wash tests, see the testing section in our raw hair vendors guide. Our article on raw vs processed hair also explains what a fully raw line should and should not do.

Red Flags When Dealing With Raw Hair Suppliers

  • They cannot or will not say where the hair comes from.
  • Every texture, including very defined curls, is described as 100 percent raw with no explanation.
  • Photos look identical to images found on other sellers’ websites.
  • They push for urgent payment or offer a large discount for paying immediately.
  • Payment is requested to a personal account with no business name.
  • There is no written order confirmation or invoice.
  • Sample hair and stock hair look or feel different.

South Indian vs North Indian Supply

Where the hair comes from affects which textures a supplier can offer. South Indian hair is often chosen for natural waves and curls, while North Indian hair suits straighter looks. On our About page we describe our South Indian hair as raw virgin hair and our North Indian hair as standard Remy hair, carefully processed to maintain uniformity. You can compare the two in our South Indian raw vs North Indian Remy hair guide, browse our South Indian raw hair wefts and North Indian virgin hair wefts, or read about natural patterns in our raw Indian hair textures guide.

FAQs

What is the difference between raw hair suppliers and raw hair vendors?

The terms are often used the same way. Supplier usually describes the business behind the stock, such as a collector, manufacturer or exporter, while vendor often describes whoever sells to you. What matters is whether the seller can explain where the hair comes from and how it is handled.

Should I buy from a manufacturer or a trader?

Buying close to the manufacturer usually gives better information and more consistent batches. Traders can offer wider choice and quick availability. Either can work if they answer your questions honestly and the hair passes your tests.

How do I know if a raw hair supplier is legitimate?

Check for a real website with contact details and written policies, business payment details, unedited hair photos, written order confirmations and a willingness to sell a small test order before a large one.

Why does raw hair from different suppliers look so different?

Hair varies by region, donor, sorting and drawing. Some sellers also steam, colour or chemically process hair while still calling it raw. Always ask how a line is processed and test samples side by side.

Can I order samples before a wholesale order?

Many suppliers allow a small first order. At Indian Raw Hair Vendor, you can ask about samples or custom options in your wholesale enquiry, and we will confirm what is available for your products.
